Community Event Highlights
2008 Peyton-Grismer Back to School Celebration

On Saturday August 23rd, the Community Development Department coordinated the 5th Annual Back to School Celebration in the Peyton-Grismer neighborhood for all focus neighborhood families. This annual event is organized to help plant the seeds for lifelong learning in our community and to assist parents and their children for back to school. The event was sponsored by a myriad of community businesses and organizations. For example, Woodbury University, Burbank Bike and the Magnolia Park Partnership donated over 400 backpacks to the event while generous organizations such as Office Depot, Nickelodeon, and the Physicians at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center donated quality school supplies to fill the many backpacks. The Burbank-Marinello Schools of Beauty team of 20 students contributed their time and talent to the event with over 4 hours worth of hair cuts and other salon services. We had groups such as LA METRO, Healthy Families, and the Burbank Adult School participate as exhibitors. This event truly united all the facets that make Burbank such a wonderful place to live, work, and play. It was attended by well over 850 residents supported by over 20 businesses and groups. All Community Development Department events would not be possible if it were not for the help of dedicated volunteers. We had over 50 city, business, service club, and notably.. resident volunteers support their Burbank community that day!

2008 verdugo street fair

On Saturday June 14th, Community Development Department staff organized the 5th Annual Verdugo Street Fair. This neighborhood event continues our collaborative efforts of building healthier and more empowered communities and presents an opportunity for all of us to become even more engaged and connected to our city's neighborhoods. Our local businesses, amazing non-profits, volunteers, and city came together and made this Street Fair as informational and fun as possible. Notably, an amazing group of Verdugo-Lake Neighborhood Moms took charge of the fun arts and crafts activities and helped us celebrate Father’s Day weekend! Over 500 residents attended the event and enjoyed fabulous music, food, and giveaways. Our children had a great time participating in interactive and educational games and activities, juggling workshops, arts & crafts projects, getting their drawings done by a talented caricature artist, watching a balloon artist create anything that they could think up, and more! The event included exhibit booths showcasing city and non profit services as well as a Bike Tune-Up Workshop staffed by the City’s CONNECT Volunteers. Every year, the Street Fair allows all participants to celebrate their neighborhood and city pride in a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere.

2007 Lake-Alameda Fall Fun Fest

On Saturday October 27th, Community Development Department staff coordinated the 2nd Annual Fall Fun Fest. The Fall Fun Fest’s purpose is to connect residents to the many resources available to them through city services and non profit service providers. Primarily, staff wanted to share updates on the schematic design for the Lake-Alameda Landscaped Access Path with the affected community. Residents were able to visually review the beautification efforts and improvements that have taken place or are in process to make their neighborhood a better place to live. The event was held at the end of the cul-de-sac on West Linden Avenue. Over 250 residents attended the event and enjoyed free activities for children, food, music, and great conversation with city staff and neighbors!

EDUCATIONAL Bike Tune Up Workshops

The Community Development Department in partnership with the Burbank Recycle Center and the Burbank Housing Corporation organized its first ever Bike Tune Up Workshop for the Peyton-Grismer neighborhood on Saturday November 11, 2006. The event was attended by a great group of kids, parents, and volunteers. Children and parents learned about bike safety, alternative forms of transportation, how to tune up their bikes, as well as recognize future problems. Today, we have coordinated seven workshops throughout our focus neighborhoods and at larger community-wide events such as National Night Out. The success of these workshops is attributed to the skills and professionalism embodied in our core City Connect! Volunteers that represent various Departments such as: Burbank Water & Power, Fire, and Community Development. In 2008, we hope to garner the support of local bike shops and volunteers in order to strengthen the educational and safety components of the program.
