Burbank Focus Neighborhood Leadership Program
(coming Spring 2009)
WHAT
The 2009 Burbank Focus Neighborhood Leadership Program proposes to be a free interactive informational program designed to educate local City designated Focus Neighborhood residents about the larger Burbank community, and empower them to become leaders in their very own communities.
WHO
Proposed to be a partnership between the Community Development Department’s Connect with your Community initiative, Leadership Burbank, and the Burbank Adult School; the program proposes to collaborate with various City Departments, businesses, and other partners in order to establish and implement programming.
WHY
- To further the goal of building community within some of Burbank’s focus neighborhoods
- To connect residents to available resources and make them resource experts.
- To inspire leadership within the Focus Neighborhoods and increase neighborhood ownership.
- To prompt participation and influence individuals to make a difference on their own by engaging residents to actively develop and promote neighborhood programs
HOW
The workshops and sessions plan to be educational, interactive, and experiential; coordinated to enhance personal and interpersonal skills. Sessions are proposed to include: informational programming, leadership exercises, and small group activities. A final team or individual project (may be a volunteer project) will allow participants to implement what they have learned and make a positive contribution to their neighborhoods.
WHEN
The Leadership Alliance proposes to consist of six to eight community workshops/sessions, participation or creation of a neighborhood project, and graduation celebration. Workshops/Sessions will be conducted depending on available schedules of students and participating agencies starting in the spring of 2009. Actual timing of the sessions will be developed to maximize participation from the neighborhood.
WHERE
The sessions will be scheduled at various locations throughout the City to highlight and emphasize the subject matter for that particular workshop or week’s subject.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Eight to ten participants who are committed to learning about their community and improving their neighborhood will be selected. Consideration will be given to individuals who are interested in developing collaborative skills to empower themselves and their neighbors.
